About The Book
This book contains an extensive study of the late Hinayana caves and shows that the rock cut activity did not abruptly stop, as is generally supposed, at the close of the second century A.D. but continued even in the third and partly in the fourth century. This fills in the hiatus between the Hinayana and Mahayana phases of rock cut architecture, the evidence for which is furnished by insignificant caves as at Kuda, Mahad, shelarwadi, Karad. They also constitutes the precursors of the Mahayana viharas at Ajantha.
