The book is based on ancient Indian inscriptions and is in Hindi language. It naturally divides itself into two parts - the first part describing the antiquity of the art of writing in ancient India, history of decipherment of ancient characters, origin of various scripts like Brahmi, Kharosthi, Gupta, Kutila, Nagari, Sarada, Bangali, Western, Telgu- Canarese, Grantha, Kalinga, Tamli, Vattelittu and script of central provinces.
The second part comprises of 84 plates and their relation to different chapters of the text has been detailed. Plates 1-70 deal with various scripts covering the period from 3rd century B.C. to the 16th century A.D.
